AI-Generated Scams
With the increasing use of AI, scammers are using it as part of their highly convincing schemes. The FBI warns everyone to lookout for the following:
- AI-Generated Text: Create phishing emails or social media profiles that are very believable and contain little grammar errors
- AI-Generated Images: Create images of fake people on social media as part of a romance scam or fake pictures of real people to sell a fraudulent product
- AI-Generated Audio: Use voice clips to have an AI call in to a credit union and pretend to be the member, getting information or transferring funds
- AI-Generated Videos: Create videos of people that act real to trick people into moving funds or giving their information
Protecting Yourself
- Create a secret word or phrase with loved ones to verify their identity
- Look for little errors in images and videos, such as distorted hands or feet, unusual facial features, or unrealistic accessories or movements
- Listen for unusual tone or word choices from a “loved one” over the phone
- Verify the identity of the person calling you by calling back at an official or trustworthy number.
- Never share sensitive information with people you meet online or over the phone.
If You Become a Victim
Take the following actions right away:
- Notify your bank or credit union if you find withdrawals you did not make.
- Gather information on who contacted you, how, what you were told to do, who they were with, and why the interaction seems suspicious.
- FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
