Fake IDs
Fraudsters are using fake IDs to steal other people’s identity! Using personal information either stolen or purchased from the dark web, they create an ID with someone else’s personal information but has the fraudster’s picture. They’ll then use the ID to commit fraud. For example, they can use the ID to:
- Steal money or information from someone else’s bank account
- Open a new account and cash or write bad checks before anyone notices
- Open new loans in someone else’s name and make off with the loan proceeds
Protecting Yourself
Because you may not know you’re a victim right away, protect yourself now:
- Make sure your current ID is on file with your bank or credit union. If a fraudster tries to use a fake ID, the bank or credit union can pull your current ID and discover the scam.
- Place a PIN or password on your bank or credit union account (and do not share it with anyone). Even if a fraudster uses a fake ID, they can’t get access to your money without the correct code.
- Check your account statements regularly for any unauthorized transactions.
- Check your credit history for any loans that you do not recall getting. You can request a free annual copy of your credit report by going to AnnualCreditReport.com.
If You Become a Victim
If a fraudster has stolen your identity, take the following actions right away:
- Close or freeze any account they accessed or opened without your knowledge.
- Add or change your PIN or password to your other accounts.
- Place a free fraud alert with the credit bureaus. The alert requires any company to verify your identity before giving you a loan.
- Report it to the FTC by going to its Identity Theft website.
- File a report with your local police department.
